Bronze Challenges (10 - 12 year olds)

Pupils should complete one of the following.

Super Shake, Local Food, Seasonal soups, Tea-time treat or Top Toastie

 

Super shake

Develop a dairy based drink or smoothie which promotes the 5 A DAY message. The drink should be for everyone to enjoy at breakfast time.

Getting started

  • Research some drinks recipes that are made with fruit and dairy products
  • Identify how different fruits should be processed (squeezing, pressing or blending)
  • Look at different fruit products such as fresh, frozen, canned or dried
  • How many different kinds of dairy products can you utilise 
  • Conduct a smoothie tasting session.
  •  Find how smoothies can contribute to your 5 A DAY

  • Make smoothies to serve at an activity or sports event in school

Local Food

Plan, prepare and cook a recipe that reflects a local or regional area from around the UK. Consider ways in which healthier cooking practices could be used.

Getting started

  • Find how many different regions are represented by the pupils in your class
  • Make a list of all the regional food from the places recorded
  • Look at the ingredients of these dishes and if they fit into a healthy diet
  • Invite a local regional food producer to your school

  • Have a regional food display as part of a school event such as an open day.

Seasonal soups

Make a hearty soup that encourages people to eat more seasonal vegetables and follows current healthy eating guidelines, particularly reducing salt content by using alternative flavourings.



Getting started

  • Run a soup brainstorming session and generate ideas by sampling some different soup styles e.g. chunky, smooth, with noodles
  • Find out what seasonal vegetables you could use and when
  • Think of  tasty natural flavourings that could be used in place of salt such as fresh herbs and spices

Make soups that could be replicated in the school canteen.Share your recipes with the canteen manager.

Tea time treat

Make a batch of luxury savoury scones that could be shared and eaten as an afternoon treat by a family.

Getting started

  •  Find out what pupils already know about different scones;
  •  Look at a range of different flours you could use including whole-wheat and stone-ground;
  •   Use the able baker guide to generate some of your own ideas to make and try.

Invite some visitors –parents or governors to sample some luxury scones

Top toastie

Plan, prepare and cook a range of toasted sandwiches which could be sold at a youth club. Use a range of different types of bread and fillings.

  • Sample a range of different breads that could be used for this challenge
  • Come up with a range of fillings using meat, fish and vegetarian options
  • Investigate different cooking methods that a youth club might use
  • Test your ideas to make sure they fit the eatwell plate and current healthy eating advice
