Cooking healthily
This activity depends on what is happening in your school. It offers you the flexibility to run a food activity, of your own choice, and enable your children to receive certificates for their success. The food activity should demonstrate good healthy eating understanding and cooking skills appropriate to the age of the children.
For example, this could be taught through …
- make foods for a school picnic or sports day which promotes health eating for themselves and their parents/carers;
- make a quick healthy snack that could be eaten with friends at home during the weekend, e.g. jacket potato fillings, savoury scones, toasted sandwiches;
- make foods for a school barbeque to celebrate the summer term, e.g. vegetable kebabs, meat or veggie burgers, breads, salads, fruit based drinks.
Use the Eatwell Plate to select ingredient and recipes that promote the 4 largest groups. Always try to promote fruit and vegeatbles. It's also good practice to use lower fat, salt and sugar options.

Chinese New Year - NEW!
Chinese New Year celebrations begin on the 7th February and last for fifteen days. Each year has a special name and this year it is The Year of the Rat. The New Year is welcomed in with firecrackers. All windows and doors in houses are opened to let the old year out, and ‘red packets’ are handed out for good fortune. There are several traditions related to food, for example - Noodles must be served long (uncut) to represent long life and fresh bean curd (Tofu) is never used as it is white and this represents death and misfortune.
Why not try our New Year Rainbow stir-fry recipe? The Chinese stir-frying method is quick and easy to use and it is ideal as a group based activity. There is a range of ideas designed to encourage the most adventurous pupils to experiment with filo pastry. We’ll guide you through it step by step with a powerpoint presentation and comprehensive teachers notes. Don’t forget you can use this for pupils working towards their challenge certificates.
